Job Title: LVN

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Processes WIC clients, provides nutrition education, encourages breastfeeding as best choice of feeding and infant. Work follows State and Local agency policies. Work is done under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for use of initiative and independent judgement. Travel is required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING; OTHER RELATED DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED:

Determines WIC eligibility, weigh’s and measures applicants and plots growth on proper growth charts, obtains blood samples and determines hemoglobin levels

Counsels applicants on nutrition, breastfeeding, and any number of other topics of interest to the client.

Issues breast pumps to nursing mothers, and explains functions of the pump

Occasional clerk duties (i.e. answering phone, making appointments, interviewing potential clients and filling out appropriate forms)

Counsel’s individuals and/or care givers certified eligible for WIC services

Teaches or assists in WIC education classes

Makes referrals to health care sources/providers

Assists in computer entry and issuing food vouchers

Acts as a public relations representative by greeting applicants/participants who come for WIC services, provides information about WIC program, participates in outreach activities as assigned

Screens immunization records to determine immunization status

May assign and/or supervise the work of others

Attends monthly in-service/staff meetings

Performs related work as assigned

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent

Completion of an accredited Vocational Nursing program

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge and ability to perform nursing procedures for which the vocational nurse course has provided the necessary degree of skill and judgement

Interviewing and counseling skills, and the ability to work with people of varying socioeconomic, cultural and educational backgrounds

Knowledge of basic clinic and office practices, preferred

Knowledge of community resources in areas if possible referrals

Willingness to work as a team member and with different health care providers

Planning and organizational skills

Special Instructions and/or Remarks

Weekend work and work hours other that 8 – 5 required

Bilingual (Spanish/English) desirable

Must have reliable transportation (when JNCPHD vehicle unavailable)

Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile liability insurance required

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Licensed to practice as a Vocational Nurse by State of Texas

Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile liability insurance required

Physical Condition

Good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position

May require prolonged sitting or standing, bending stooping or stretching

May occasionally require lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds

Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range

Follow immunizations guidelines per JNCPHD/WIC guidelines
